Radio Programs and Ballad Operas (Coming Soon)

From the late 1930s through the 1950s, Alan Lomax wrote, produced, and hosted radio shows and series for the Office of War Information, CBS, the BBC, and RAI Italy. These included "Your Ballad Man," "The Land is Bright," "Transatlantic Call," "Back Where I Come From," "Wellsprings of America," "Sing Christmas," "Ascoltate, Le Colline Cantano." In 1945 and 1950 Lomax worked with social scientists at Columbia University to spread the word about the new penicillin drugs for syphilis and gonorrhea via singing infomercials featuring Woody Guthrie, the Coon Creek Girls, Cisco Huston, and others. After Pearl Harbor he called upon his colleagues to capture immediate man-in-the-street reactions to the bombing, which were broadcast on "People Speak to the President." Some sixty years later, the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress sent out a similar appeal following the tragedy of 9/11. Lomax's ballad operas include "The Chisholm Trail," "Bound for Glory," and "The Martins and the Coys," featuring musical performances, narration, and character acting by Woody Guthrie, Josh White, Lily Mae Ledford, Wade Mainer, Burl Ives, and Pete Seeger, among others.
